The Eighth Day

Kauai

I. We arrive in Nawilwili, Kaui, at about 8:00 a.m.

Marilyn and I are off for a full day of sightseeing--Waimea Canyon in the morning and Wailua River in the afternoon. Peg takes a helicopter tour here, while Cliff chooses to wander aimlessly about Kauai with some fellow in a pickup truck.

Our first stop on the way to the canyon is here--for restrooms and, of course, to buy stuff. Following a long, but interesting, bus ride we arrive at our destination. Note that we came on Marilyn's personal tour bus.

We found Waimea Canyon quite impressive.

II. On our way to the Wailua River we stopped for lunch here:

Some of the beautiful flowers that were here.

III. Following lunch, we cruised up the Wailua River to visit Fern Grotto.

Here on the left is our boat, and on the right is the onboard entertainment. We had a combination river pilot/ukele player.

There is apparently a law in Hawaii that a visitor must never have more than an hour without seeing a hula dancer. Sure enough, there was one on our trip up the river.

Here she is.

The voyage up the Wailua was very pleasant, although there were some water skiers whose presence took the edge off the wilderness experience. (At least there were no "personal watercraft"--aka JetSkis.)

We proceeded up river until we docked and walked a short dstance to the celebrated Fern Grotto. Here we were entertained by musicians and, of course, the ubiquitous hula dancers.

More pictures at the Grotto:

IV. Here are some exotic birds we saw on our way to the river. The small ones are "zebra doves." I don't know what the big ones are, but they sure are everywhere on Kauai.

V. This was our last night on board, so following the show in the Stardust Theatre, we visited the Star Bar and then returned relatively early to the cabin so that Marilyn could finish packing for us.
